Most children’s shops start from the same assumption, that more choice is better, that a wider range makes it easier to find the right thing, and that if something exists, someone will want it.
That assumption is exactly what I didn’t want to build Sāaru around.
In reality, parents aren’t struggling because they don’t have enough options. They’re struggling because everything is presented as equally good. Every product claims to be educational, long-lasting, sustainable, or loved by children, and when everything is positioned as the right choice, it becomes harder to trust any of it.
This is where decision paralysis creeps in. Faced with endless options that all sound reassuringly similar, the decision itself starts to feel heavy. Not because parents don’t care, but because they care enough to want to get it right.
Stocking everything shifts that burden onto the buyer. It asks parents to evaluate safety, materials, longevity, values, and suitability every single time they make a purchase. That isn’t neutral; it’s work, and it adds to an already full mental load.
Curation is the opposite of that. It’s the decision-making happening earlier, before a product ever reaches the shelf. It’s looking closely at what a toy is made from, how it’s likely to be used, how long it will realistically last, and whether it genuinely adds something different rather than duplicating what’s already out there.
At Sāaru, a product doesn’t earn its place just because it sells well elsewhere. Many things don’t make it in because they rely on novelty, repeat something better already exists, or only work for a very narrow age window before being outgrown.
Not stocking something is still a choice. It’s a deliberate decision to say this doesn’t add enough value, even if it might sell quickly.
A smaller catalogue isn’t about minimalism or personal taste, it’s about clarity. It allows parents to choose without having to decode endless claims or compare near-identical options, because the consideration has already happened.
You’re not being offered everything. You’re being offered what’s already been thought through. And trust me, I've really thought it through.
That’s the point.
